Leo - The Therapy Dog

Picture1.jpg

Caring for mental wellbeing has always been important and during these testing times, even more critical than ever.  With this in mind, we will be beginning a new initiative with the introduction of a therapy dog in school.

Leo, a 9-month-old Labrador mix, has been training for this role and is due to start his next stage of training with short sessions of conditioning in the school environment.  During this training period, and with Covid restrictions in place, his time in school and mixing with pupils will be limited.

Once Leo’s training is complete, it is hoped that he will be able to directly help pupils who suffer with anxiety, be a reading buddy and support in curriculum areas such as with PSHE and Science.

UPDATE:

Leo is now 19 months old and his training has progressed well.  He passed his Basic Obedience and is continuing with regular 1:1 sessions to ensure it remains at a high standard.

You might have seen Leo in school more regularly as he continues to learn how to behave around lots of people; he has even made an appearance in some classes!
